Eversheds comment: US patent reform long overdue but needs balance
- United Kingdom
03-04-2014
Firms in the US have criticised patent reform legislation that is strongly supported by tech companies and designed to make it more difficult for patent trolls to launch “frivolous” lawsuits. On this, Simon Crossley, head of intellectual property at global law firm Eversheds, comments:
“There is a genuine global corporate concern that the US patent system is becoming increasingly complex and allows a friendly home to so-called patent troll activity. US patent reform to address this is overdue, but as the reports coming out of Silicon Valley indicate, there is a judgement call to make between those businesses that see patents as vital to innovation and those that have been plagued by troll suits.”
